Recreation #5

For my recreation, I decided to try to emulate the work of Barbara Kasten. A lot of her work involves constructing sets or altering permanent ones in an impermanent way. I decided to try it myself, and I simplified my set construction much more. I really wanted to try and pull out some shadows from the wire structure, so I added in a lamp to have more direct lighting. I also wanted to make sure there was a lot of contrast, so I used a light background to best show the darker shadows that were being projected upon it. The actual set itself was a foam core board, my glass palette, a wooden dowel, and a record holder. I wish that the glass wasn't so matte, but the backside of it is gesso'd so I guess that is all part of constructing my own set.

  1. I enjoy this image - lovely contrast.
I like your use of taking a "common" object and flipping it into abstraction. Very nice!

  2. I like the composition of this photo. It's very simple, yet interesting. My only thought is that I wonder how it would look if the shadows were more pronounced.

  3. I think that this recreation is actually really great. I love all of the lines you have moving around in this photo, especially all of the lines made from the shadows. Good contrast and lighting. No suggestions really.

  4. The black and white highlights the geometric shapes of the image. I like the strong diagonals and simplicity of the image. I agree with you though that I wish the shadows were stronger.

  5. This was actually a really good idea. The same ideas of repetition and angles are there. Perhaps to add more dimension and more angles you could play with putting different kinds of paper or something into the slots.

  6. This recreation is similar to the original in a way of abstractness. You took a common object and abstracted it, but I'd like to see it abstracted more! Also, it might be cool to add a color or two into this photo to make it more similar to the recreation. I like how the shadows add to the abstraction as well.

  7. - I think you were definitely able to capture the abstractness of the object.
    - The shadows and the positioning work very well for the composition of the image
    - If you wanted to go for a really abstract effect, I think it would be interesting to darken and sharpen the shadow, almost to the point where you cannot tell shadow from object

  8. i like the idea of taking an everyday mundane object and turning it into an abstract image composed of lines and light. this makes your image different from hers and also possibly more challenging to achieve the effect! good job with composition of object and shadow. perhaps a slightly tighter crop would remove a bit more of the object, thus pushing it further into abstraction but still revealing it as a mundane object.

  9. I like the concept/composition of this photo. I think you could push the contrast in the shadows more. You could do this on the computer with increasing the contrast or try to reshoot it with even more direct light. Possibly do it in a dark room with only one really strong light source. It would be fun to continue taking photos similar to this idea with strong repetition in form.

  10. Interesting idea! Very nice contrast. I think the composition is much more simple than those in Barbara Kasten's photos, but that it still works well. If you made added objects into the frame or used bright colors, it might be more similar to Kasten's work.

  11. The shadow in this image is working really well. I like how you took something so simple and made a nice composition with it. My only suggestion would be to maybe crop the image at the top or bottom to make the object not so centered in the photo.

  12. Although your attempt at using glass to reflect light was not successful, I think that the use of light in this image was. The shadows really make the image and it is interesting to see the relationship between the subject and shadow. It might work better to slightly darken the shadows to make them seem more apart of the subject.

  13. I like the shadows in this pic you see a lot of them yet the main subject hardly has that many bars to it. the tube going throw it is weird though not quiet should what it is and it bugs me a little nut it dose help in going from the bottom the the top of the pic.

  14. The composition is very interesting, i like they way you took a normal object that has a purpose and photographed in a way that is mainly visual in shape and structure. A suggestion might be to use a more powerful light closer to the object to get a non diffused look in the shadows.
